Title: | FSW Using Drilling Machine |
Authors: | BEN AUSTIN B ALAPATT |
Issue Date: | 4-May-2020 |
Abstract: | Aluminium welding is done by Tungsten Inert Gas(TIG) welding, which is very costly. Friction stir welding is an economically better alternative for this. We have successfully done friction stir welding using the drilling machine on aluminium alloy. We have performed welding on 15 specimens and the tool never failed. We got satisfactory results in tensile tests, hardness tests, ultrasonic tests and liquid penetrant test. It was found that weld quality increased with increasing RPM and decreasing tool travel speed. We got better weld quality at 800 RPM and 50 mm/min travel speed. The tool travel speed can be further increased by increasing the RPM. |
